Saving Nature, dignifying human life
Fazenda São Marcos was acquired 50 years ago by my parents as a family retreat in nature. The almost 1 km^2 property has always been filled with water streams and native vegetation. From the beginning, my father sought several activities to provide financial sustainability and generate income for local workers in partnership (half) systems, including livestock activity. In 2001, he left the entire pasture area of more than 40ha to be reforested.
In 2018, we became aware of unemployed local residents who were deforesting and practicing agriculture in uphill areas for subsistence and income purposes without knowledge of environmental issues. Then we created our project for environmental protection and income generation for local residents in partnership systems where we hire consultancy for organic production, produce mushrooms in a forest environment, practice native beekeeping, plant native fruit trees and develop ecotourism and trail tourism. We understand that environmental preservation must be linked to income generation, so that more and more local families can act in defense of forests.
Since the beginning, we have also been practitioners and promoters of organic, agroecologic, minimally processed, local and animal-free food as a way to minimize our impact on the environment and restore people's health. We seek actions to mitigate climate change such as producing biomass with fast-growing plants for fixation organic material (carbon) in the soil, producing animal meat substitutes (ora pro nobis, edamame, mushrooms) and planting around 3,000 trees. We established a volunteer program to help with organic production and to teach people on environmental and food health issues.
